How to draw anthro heads

By Kelly | June 4, 2007

A quick example of how I approach heads:

tutorial anthro head drawing step 1

It helps to think in terms of 3D objects. The main mass of the head is a sphere, with the attached muzzle and ear shapes varying depending on which species you’re trying to depict.

I’ll start with the rough sphere and some crosshairs on top to set the angle and position of features I’ll draw later.

Then, on top I’ll sketch out the form of the eyes and eye sockets, and the muzzle form below. Eyes are usually placed above the center crosshair. A good rule of thumb is that the eyes are spaced one eye-width apart.

After that I’ll add in other forms like cheek-fluff and hair, and start working out details.

The main objective here is to figure out form and pose before adding any details!

More Examples

These are old but should give you some idea how I approach different species:

Being a very new artist, this is what i used to get started a few months back.
It’s got a nice overlook on drawing a head.
Granted, I’m still not very good… but it’s more than likely to help someone out who’s new.
    Good job!

awesome tutorial! i’ll definitely make use of it.

My greatest weakness is getting the hips right. ie. linking the legs to the rest of the body, especially when working with digitigrade legs! if you can do a full body one that covers this problem, i’d appreciate it, thanks.

Drahor, Try and take the examples of how the heads can be broken down from this tutorial, look at some horse references/anatomy and figure how you can apply it yourself.

If you rely entirely on formulas you’re not going to learn how to pick up on new subjects when assistance such as this is not available.

Also I haven’t read them but that “Weatherly Guide” and “Art of Animal Drawing” linked in the books section more than likely has the info you’d want.

I hate to say this but; the anthro wolf head is a bit wrong. I know it’s supposed to be anime, but the ears are wrong and the nose is a bit short. It looks more like some kind of cat more then a wolf. It’s a good way to teach though, and for that I’m greatful.

But I’ve been wanting to do some of this for a while now, and it’ll really help to see it from someone as expiranced as you. :) Plus, I’m going to try my hand at Pokemorphs, and implementing some of these designs (since most of the PKMN are based on animals) in that too. 152. 152
    Chrona Says:
    December 29th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Ferrets have thinner noses than cats. All the area around the muzzle is a lot thinner than a cat’s. A ferret’s body is also thinner, and longer. But i think the most noticeable difference is the neck. A ferret has a much longer neck than a cat. http://cache1.asset-cache.net/xc/200396877-001.jpg?v=1&c=NewsMaker&k=2&d=BEE8F6E6581A1106D59A9CCCAFB525E01F6F6178A68B340C < That's what I'm talking about.

There is one thing I’d really love to understand better; I’m terrible at make dog/wolf faces with the snout pointing down at a frontal view… Um… Much like the third rabbit’s picture. When I make the muzzle a simple extension from the face it looks terrible and unrealistic… I was wondering if perhaps in the future you could maybe put a diagram up explaining how to do this better. :D

ok, these are nice. a little cliche, but very well drawn.

Now, a suggestion…how about tutorials on (don’t freak about here)

    MONKEYS!!! (^o^)

Now, before you get all frantic and tell me that those don’t count as anthros because they already have thumbs and are basically smaller, hairier humans that throw poo @ everything that moves (which is HIGHLY offensive and stereotypical, btw! >_<), think about it. How many stories/webcomics/anime-style drawings out there have anything other than foxes, the occasional dragon, and oh yeah, WOLVES!!! I'd say…17% at the least. Where's the originallity, people!? And I'm not talking about anthros in caves, tribes, space suits (except for Falco from Starfox…and Brawl, lol) or forests. I'm talkin' modern day settings, teens dressed in awesome urban punk clothes, crazy jackets, chainlinks, baggy pants, funny hats, and DREADLOCKS!!! ?anime-style? (ahem…T?T) yeah…

I highly doubt anyone's gonna see this post, but it can't hurt to try…

and if nobody wants to post any tutorials on monkeys, then maybe they can do some on falcons. Any takers?
