How to draw anthro heads
By Kelly | June 4, 2007
A quick example of how I approach heads:

It helps to think in terms of 3D objects. The main mass of the head is a sphere, with the attached muzzle and ear shapes varying depending on which species you’re trying to depict.
I’ll start with the rough sphere and some crosshairs on top to set the angle and position of features I’ll draw later.
Then, on top I’ll sketch out the form of the eyes and eye sockets, and the muzzle form below. Eyes are usually placed above the center crosshair. A good rule of thumb is that the eyes are spaced one eye-width apart.
After that I’ll add in other forms like cheek-fluff and hair, and start working out details.
The main objective here is to figure out form and pose before adding any details!
More Examples
These are old but should give you some idea how I approach different species:

Great tutorial! I’m thinking about starting more furry art. You see, I draw a lot of Sonic-fanart, mostly for the part that it’s simple. But I’ve been wanting to do some of this for a while now, and it’ll really help to see it from someone as expiranced as you. :) Plus, I’m going to try my hand at Pokemorphs, and implementing some of these designs (since most of the PKMN are based on animals) in that too. So overall, this will really help me with my drawing ability. Kudos to you!

Manarr is right! It’s amazing, you inspired me to draw something and -here’s the shocker- IT DIDN’T LOOK BAD. X3 and I’m my own worst critic. I hate everything I’v done. To others wanting to improve, I highly suggest going onto Youtube and looking up tutorials, they really, realy help. Given not as much as these, but you can see how their made. Sorry for the ramble. X3 Awsome art, thank you. Fuzzy out.

This is a very nice tutorial, but I agree with Lucky Cat on this one. Could you make a step-by-step tutorial on drawing feline heads?

I’ve been trying to draw anthros for years and this tutorial has really helped, however it would be nice if you made a short step-by-step progression of drawing a cat head, like the one you did of a dog head.

Before I couldn’t draw and in three days with these I can draw a full sized anthro.
Thanks for the awesome help and tutorials.
