Cartoon Coloring with Photoshop
By Kelly | May 17, 2007
In this example I use a pencil sketch, Flash for inking, and Photoshop for coloring.
Check my tutorial Inking with Flash for a more detailed breakdown of the first step, Inking the Sketch.
1. Inking the Sketch

2. Painting Flats

3. Shading

4. Highlights

5. Finishing Touches

6. Finally Finished

would this process be any different in GIMP? Or would I need a completely different tutorial for that?

Does this work on Flash 8, or Paint.NET? Those are the only two drawing programs I own.
Also, could you show a tutorial on animating anthros with flash?

Brett,
If you can get a student edition of Photoshop, it’s much more affordable and isn’t any different from the regular one.
I would recommend getting the latest version, simply because there’s not an easy way to get legit copies of older versions. If you see a sealed boxed copy of CS2 then go for it. Don’t bother with ‘used’ or ‘OEM’ because they are usually pirated.
Additionally there are affordable alternatives like the open-source GIMP or OpenCanvas which do most of what PS does.

Kelly, I have a question. Can you tell me which Photoshop I should get? I don’t wanna go out and buy something for $600 when I find out that I don’t need it. Should I get Photoshop CS4?

Wow! XD I thought I was the only ‘dork’ who used Flash to inking lines, because it’s awesome that way.
^^ I remember doing that way back when, about Flash 4 or so. Brilliant work on this tutorial! It’s awesome. I’ll have to keep it in mind. XDD Hmm…!! *bookmarks*

Oh I forgot, how about dropping it into Artrage, which is very affordable at $25, or painter?
