How to draw comics : RHP walkthrough

By Kelly | April 9, 2007

Here’s a quick look at how pages for my Roza comic are made.

I print my script for 2 pages, which has space at the bottom to sketch out the panels. I like to work 2 at the same time in case I ever want to print the comic, that way I know it’ll flow nicely with each pair of pages.

Next I sketch out the final page, scan it into photoshop and block out the frames and border. I use a template file so each page has the same border and size.

I use gradients to block out the general background colors, and then loosely paint on top until I get the overall color and value figured out.

A little more refining of the backgrounds, adding texture and detail. I decided to move the linework in two panels a bit to balance composition.

Character colors are painted on a new layer. Usually I start with flat colors, then render shadow and highlight on each character. For example, I color and shade Roza’s hair in every panel, rather than doing one panel at a time.

The final stage- added the last highlights and effects, tweaked the contrast a bit, and put lettering and sound fx on top.

And you can read the rest of Roza’s story here.

Wonderful. I enjoy your tutorials. Will you make some more in depth anthro ones though? Different animal bodies and such.

Awesome tutorial! I really love your work and webcomics, and I was excited to see all the tutorials you had on your website and Draw Furry. I think Rosa is one of the most beautiful comics on the ‘net, and it’s great that everyone gets to see the process.

You always say… Then I sketch it out… but how?
I always want to make things in color but if I colord it it comes evrywhere!
I no it is becouse the lines aren’t finished but how do I ink sketches?
I tried to follow some tutorials but what I only read is use the brush or use this use that to ink the lines. How?
Next is How do you erase all the sketches?Just with a eraser on photoshop?
The thing is I don’t get it at all! :(
And I got a lot of drawings who deviantly needs to be inked and colored…
Pleas send me a message back.
I hope to learn it someday and make comics like you!
If you want to you can e-mail me on denisetiggelman@hotmail.nl

Wow! This is an awesome tutorial. I am starting to draw comics and this information really helps.

Kirin, can you make a “beginners” tutorial? I could start out easily and then come back to this page and make my beginners comic into a real advanced looking one. That will be much appriciated since you make really helpful tutorials!
